Oceanside CA— Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside (BGCO) received $5,000 in grant funding from Southern California Edison (SCE) to enhance their BE GREAT: Graduate program.
BE GREAT: Graduate works to keep at-risk students from giving up on learning and dropping out of school. The program ensures members have the support they need to reach the academic finish line on time, with a plan for the future. BGCO works individually with each student by staying in close contact with their school, tracking their behavior and attendance, and assigning them to a mentor who provides weekly check-ins and encouragement during troubling times.
BGCO focuses deeply on creating a support system that celebrates the successes of its members. For instance, this past May, thirty Club members from the 2017 graduating class were honored at BGCO’s Second Annual Graduation Celebration, hosted at Buffalo Wild Wings. All graduates had plans to either attend college, trade school, or join the military. Their elected majors ranged everywhere from criminology, psychology and engineering; to acting, photography and classic auto body restoration.
“Many of our teens face challenges on their path to graduation and BE GREAT: Graduate helps them stay on course,” said Jodi Diamond, CEO. “We want to honor our graduates and celebrate this tremendous accomplishment. We will continue this tradition and increase the number of grads until we have a 100 percent graduation rate.”
