Oceanside CA— The IRONMAN season opens with approximately 3,400 participants swimming, riding and running in the IRONMAN 70.3 – Oceanside, this Saturday, April 1, 2017 beginning at 6:40 a.m. The age range of the athletes, representing 27 countries, is from 19 to 79-years-old with occupations that include airline pilot, dentist, police, architect, actor and teacher. Forty-five U.S. states are represented – California has the most representation with 2,155 registered athletes.
The defending champions are Lionel Sanders (CAN), 3:51:17 and Heather Wurtele (CAN), 4:16:17.
The course leads athletes along a 1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike and 13.1-mile run on a course that utilizes the scenic beauty of Oceanside.
Athletes begin their day with a single-loop swim in the calm and protected waters of Oceanside Harbor. Once out of the water, participants will embark upon a single-loop bike course along the California coastline to San Clemente before dropping down into the Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton and then swinging back to Oceanside Pier.
The double-loop run course winds along Oceanside Pier and then out to Oceanside’s flat beachfront path known as “The Strand,” where miles of sandy beaches provide beautiful views.
Where are the best places to watch the IRONMAN 70.3 California- Oceanside?
- Swim: At the North End of Transition by the Harbor Pelican Deli Mart.
- Bike: The majority of the bike course is on Camp Pendleton and not accessible. Spectators can view the transition area along Harbor Drive.
- Run: This is a two loop run course. Spectators can view the athletes heading in and out of transition. It is a 1 mile walk to the pier / finish line area. Spectators an walk on the sidewalk at Strand / Boardwalk and walk part of the run course.
