Local wind gusts up to 60mph possible
San Diego County CA— The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Warning and Flash Flood Watch effective 7:00am to 10:00pm, Friday, January 20, 2017. A high wind warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained wind speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
A couple of storm systems will bring gusty southwest to west winds to the mountains and deserts tonight through Saturday morning. Winds for the rest of today will impact mainly the mountains and deserts.
A stronger storm system will move through on Friday bringing strong and possibly damaging southwest to west winds to the coast and valleys in addition to the mountains and San Diego County deserts. Winds are still strong but not quite as powerful in the other desert areas. Blustery winds continue in the mountains and deserts on Saturday before weakening. However, another strong storm will bring strong winds again late Sunday through Monday.
Winds will be west to southwest 15 to 30 mph with gusts of 45 mph and local gusts to 60 mph Friday morning through Friday evening.
The Warning includes Orange County, San Diego County coast and valleys, the Inland Empire along with the Santa Ana mountains and foothills.
The strong winds could topple trees and power lines and make for hazardous driving conditions for high profile vehicles. Tree limbs and other debris may fall onto roadways. Structural damage is possible.
The winds will weaken late Friday night but still be blustery, especially at the immediate coast. Winds may become strong again late Sunday and Monday.
Flash Flood Watch
The storm system moving through the region and increasing atmospheric instability will create favorable conditions for heavy showers and thunderstorms from mid morning Friday through early
Friday evening leading to the increased threat of flash flooding at the coast, valleys and mountains below 5500 foot elevation.
Debris flows from recent burn scars will also be possible.
