Carlsbad CA— One of the newest natural reserves in coastal north county needs some TLC. Join Preserve Calavera at this clean-up along Buena Vista Creek, and enjoy a rare opportunity to see this special area that is not yet open to the public.
The Buena Vista Creek Ecological Reserve was created in 2007 when Preserve Calavera led the local effort to preserve this priceless land. This 134-acre reserve along SR-78 between El Camino Real and College Blvd is on the border of Oceanside and Carlsbad . This valley includes a rare combination of cultural, historic and natural resources including the regional wildlife movement corridor, a key reach of Buena Vista Creek, the historic Marron-Hayes Adobe and the sacred El Salto Waterfall.
The land is now owned by the CA Department of Fish and Wildlife, in trust for the people of California. At the time the land was acquired, years of intensive agricultural use and encampments had taken their toll. Hundreds of hours of volunteer work removed old agricultural debris and began the slow process of restoration. Now managed by the Center for Natural Lands Management, the land is gradually being restored to a healthy natural ecosystem.
The long-term plan is to create connecting trails and open the area to public use. But like many of our natural lands, this area continues to be impacted by unplanned public use. Homeless encampments pollute the creek, trash and waste products damage wildlife, unplanned trails trample native plants.
This special public clean-up event will continue the long-term effort to restore this land. Work will include removing debris from several long-term homeless encampments. All ages welcome. Release must be signed for those under 18. Community service hours provided. Parents/guardians must supervise young children.
Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes and work gloves if you have them. Gloves, bags, water, tools and snacks will be provided.
Meet at the dead end of Haymar Rd. on Saturday, Nov 5, 8:30 – 11:30 AM. This is just past the Carlsbad Golf Center at 2711 Haymar.
