One of Only 13 Agencies in the Country to Receive the Award This Year
Oceanside CA—The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) presented the North County Transit District (NCTD) with the “Gold Standard” award yesterday at the transit agency’s Board Meeting. Mark Packard, NCTD’s Board Chair, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
“Receiving this award is an honor, and only made possible by a lot of teamwork,” said Jaime Becerra, NCTD’s Chief of Transit Enforcement. “Our agency works closely with the Department of Homeland Security, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and other law enforcement agencies to ensure that our passengers and employees are safe while using our system.”
The “Gold Standard” award recognizes NCTD’s high security standards and preparation based on TSA’s voluntary Baseline for Assessment for Security Enhancement (BASE) program. The BASE program is geared towards fulfilling the security assessment section requirements of the 9/11 Commission Act. It aids transit systems by analyzing 17 categories in security and emergency preparedness, including potential vulnerabilities that should be addressed.
NCTD is one of only 13 agencies to receive the award this year. “These agencies are to be commended for their commitment and hard work that this level of achievement requires and for their continued dedication to ensure the security of travelers nationwide,” said TSA Assistant Administrator, Eddie Mayenschein.
Matthew Tucker, NCTD’s Executive Director, said, “Our top priority is the safety and security of our customers, employees, and the general public. This award demonstrates our proactive commitment and ongoing efforts to foster safety and security and we look forward to continuing this standard of excellence in the years to come.”
