Carlsbad CA— Early this morning, April 6, 2016 at approximately 3:16am, a 52 year-old male from Los Angeles was driving his Pontiac Grand Prix northbound on I-5 just north of Palomar Airport Rd. According to a witness, he suddenly stopped his vehicle in the lanes of traffic and was hit from behind by a Chevy Equinox driven by a 50 year-old male from Torrance.
After the collision, the Pontiac was pushed into the center divide and the Equinox came to rest on the right shoulder.
The driver of the Pontiac ran from the center divide to the right shoulder to argue with the other driver. According to the driver of the Equinox, the driver of the other vehicle was acting strange while arguing.
After the argument was finished, the driver of the Pontiac ran back across the freeway and was struck in the #2 lane by a Toyota Corolla driven by a 57 year-old male from Los Angeles.
The pedestrian landed in the lanes of traffic and was struck again by a Honda Civic driven by a 28 year-old male.
Unfortunately the 52 year-old male pedestrian was pronounced dead on scene.
Due to the collision, the driver of the Corolla suffered injuries to his hand and was transported to Scripps La Jolla.
A SigAlert was issued as all lanes of Northbound I-5 were shut down just after 3:30am and traffic was detoured to Cannon Road. All lanes were reopened shortly before 7:00am.
At this time it is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor in this collision. It remains under investigation.
