Carlsbad CA— The City of Carlsbad offers two American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses this spring break from March 28 through April 1 and from April 4 through April 8 at Alga Norte Aquatic Center. The course runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. for ages 15 and older and coincides with spring break for Carlsbad Unified and San Marcos Unified school districts.
Participants must be able to swim 300 yards using front crawl and breaststroke, tread water for two minutes without use of hands and swim 20 yards combined with a surface dive to retrieve a 10 lb. brick. The course also requires some home study. Successful completion of the course will provide participants with certifications in Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid.
Also upon successful completion of the course and pre-employment tests, participants may be eligible for hire. Jobs are available at Alga Norte Aquatic Center and Monroe Street Pool. After 700 hours of employment completed within one year with the City of Carlsbad Aquatics Division, participants may be eligible for course reimbursement fee of up to $100.
The course fee is $170 and Carlsbad residents will receive a 10 percent discount. An additional $35 will be due to the American Red Cross before the course start date.
