Carlsbad CA— The Lancer Dancers, Carlsbad High School’s varsity dance team, earned top honors in the varsity hip hop division at the World School Cheer/Dance Competition, held Jan. 30 – 31 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports in Orlando, Florida. The Lancer Dancers were also awarded the 1st Place world rankings awarded to the overall highest scoring team in the competition.
The World School Cheer/Dance competition, held in conjunction with the annual Universal Dance Association (UDA) National Championships, is an invitation-only, international competition where only the top five high school teams from the previous year are invited to compete. This year’s competition included dance teams from the USA, Ecuador, Mexico, Colombia,Japan, and China.
“Our girls are so proud to have earned the title of 2016 World Champs,” said the team’s coach, Laura Nares. “All the hard work and practice they put into preparing for these two competitions has paid off in a big way.”
In addition to winning the prestigious international title, the Lancer Dancers competed in the UDA Nationals, where they placed third in the nation in medium group jazz and third in medium group hip hop. Both the jazz and hip hop routines can be viewed online by going to www.lancerdancers.com and clicking on “videos.”
“This is the first time in six years that the Lancer Dancers have earned medals in both jazz and hip hop,” said Booster Club President, Michelle Ginn. “It’s an amazing accomplishment when you’re competing against hundreds of the country’s top public school and private performing arts school dance teams.”
All teams had to compete in regional competitions in 2015-16 to qualify for UDA Nationals. The UDA National Championships is the only nationwide dance team competition endorsed by the National Federation of State High School Associations, the national administrative organization for high school athletics and fine arts programs.
In addition to performing at school sporting events and competitions, the Lancer Dancers take pride in performing at wide range of community and charitable events each year. Support from the City of Carlsbad and community businesses empowers squad to compete at such an elite level. The Lancer Dancers have a long tradition of success in national competition, including 14 National Titles in jazz and hip hop.
