Escondido CA— Last night, December 20, 2015 at approximately 10:39pm. a 25-year-old male from Fallbrook was driving his 2014 Chevy Sonic eastbound on SR-78 east of Nordahl Rd at an unknown speed.
He stated that he was attempting to change from the #3 lane into the #2 lane when he observed another vehicle in the lane.
As he attempted to take evasive actions to avoid a collision, the driver of a 2003 Toyota Sequoia did the same. The vehicles collided into each other and went down the right shoulder embankment. The Toyota Sequoia overturned and collided into a tree.
There were a total of 7 people in the Toyota Sequoia. Two adult females were transported to Palomar Hospital, a 19-year-old female (who may be the driver) was transported to Scripps La Jolla. All had moderate to major injuries.
Four people in the SUV were pronounced dead on scene. A 40-year-old female, a 75-year-old female, a boy (estimated age of 9), and a teenage girl (estimated age of 17). At this is time it appears that they were all from the Loma Linda area.
The driver of the 2014 Chevy Sonic was arrested on scene and taken back to the Oceanside CHP office for further questioning on charges of vehicular manslaughter.
At this time it is unknown if alcohol or drugs played a factor in this collision. It remains under investigation.
