Carlsbad CA— The Mt. SAC Cross Country Invitational is now in its 66th year, and has become the nation’s largest cross country invitational in the nation.
A record 25,000 participants competed over Mt. SAC’s famed three mile cross country course. Included in those 25,000 runners were two sisters representing Aviara Oaks Middle School – Skyler and Stormy Wallace. Both girls placed first in the two mile event – Skyler in the 8th grade division and Stormy in the 6th grade division! Races start every 8 minutes or less, and all results are shared on a live webcast. The course has changed little over the years, making it one of the few courses where different generations can compare times.
The Boys & Girls Club facilitates after school sports at Carlsbad’s three middle schools. Aviara Oaks has a highly competitive cross country team led by the Wallace sisters. Cross country is a no-cut sport, which allows all youngsters the opportunity to be a part of the team.
“Cross country has made the transition from a small elementary to a big middle school easy for Skyler and Stormy,” said Club Athletic Director Nigel Cabral. “They have met many friends and enjoy showing up to practice and meets ready to compete. Skyler has a simple strategy every time she competes: ‘Keep up with me if you can.’. Both sisters look forward to running at Sage Creek and in college, wherever that may be!”
