UPDATE: Carlsbad Police report, during the investigation , CAL I.D., a criminal Data base, positively identified the arrested subject as Christopher Sean Mastas 07/22/89 of Encinitas. Daniel Acebedo has been identified as an associate of Mastas. Acebedo was not arrested and at this time is not believed to be involved.
Carlsbad CA— This morning, October 2, 2015 at approximately 11:50 a.m., the City of Carlsbad Police Department responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from the area of Carlsbad Blvd. and Cerezo Drive. The vehicle was burglarized, keys were located by the suspect inside the truck, and the vehicle was stolen.
At approximately 12:25 the truck was located in the area of 6100 Paseo Del Norte. A person originally identified as Daniel P Acebedo (07/23/1985) of Encinitas was contacted at the vehicle and the suspect fled on foot. San Diego Sheriff’s helicopter, ASTREA, arrived to assist and was instrumental in the apprehension of the suspect.
He then fled across I-5, on foot, across Avenida Encinas and eventually onto the beach north of Island Way.
The suspect then ran into the ocean and began swimming south. With the assistance from ASTREA, the Oceanside Police Department’s Harbor Division and the California State lifeguards, he was escorted to the beach where he was placed into custody. There were no injuries from the incident and there are no outstanding suspects. The investigation is ongoing.
The suspect, Christopher Sean Mastas, was booked into the Vista Detention Facility on charges of vehicle burglary, vehicle theft, resisting arrest and an outstanding warrant.
