The Sheriff’s Department released the names of the suspect and deputies involved in an Encinitas shooting and standoff that began Feb. 20 and ended early Feb. 21.
Deputies Colin Snodgrass, 27, and James Steinmeyer, 31, were injured when suspect Evan Kim Tian Kwik, 22, fired at them during a call to a house in the 700 block of Del Rio Avenue, according to a Sheriff’s Department report.
Snodgrass has been a San Diego sheriff’s deputy since April 2009, assigned to the Encinitas Sheriff’s Station. He has had two surgeries so far for a leg wound he suffered in the shooting, according to the report. He is recovering at Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla.
Steinmeyer, also assigned to the Encinitas Sheriff’s Station, has been with the department since April 2010. He was grazed on the forehead, and was treated for his injuries and released.
Kwik, the suspect involved in the 10-hour standoff, was found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound Feb. 21 at 1:38 a.m., authorities reported.
The two deputies were shot and injured when they approached Kwik at about 3:30 p.m. Feb. 20 at the house on Del Rio Avenue in a follow-up call to one made at 1 p.m., according to authorities. The standoff forced the evacuation of nine homes and closed portions of Leucadia Boulevard, Saxony Road and Del Rio Avenue.
A sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail, Crisis Negotiation Team and regional SWAT teams remained on the scene after dark. Deputies sent robots into the house at 1:30 a.m. to check on the suspect. After the house was considered safe, the sheriff’s Special Enforcement Detail entered the house at 1:38 a.m. and found the suspect’s body with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, authorities said.
The Sheriff’s Department had contact with Kwik in the past. He had been taken into custody in December for evaluation, authorities said in the report. No further details were given as to why.
