Solana Beach CA— On Thursday, August 13, 2015, at about 11:04 p.m., deputies from the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station were dispatched to investigate a report of unknown trouble in the area of Stevens Avenue at South Nardo Avenue in Solana Beach. Initially, a concerned citizen called to report seeing a male being chased by two other males at the above location. Upon their arrival, the deputies contacted two separate victims.
The first victim reported being out for a jog when he was approached by two young men who asked if he was a gang member. After telling the men he was not, they threatened to beat him with a broom stick and a skateboard to show their gang had been there. The victim fled on foot and was chased by both suspects.
As the suspects were chasing the first victim, they came upon the second victim who was riding his bicycle home from work. This time the suspects told the victim to give them his cellular phone, his backpack and bicycle and threatened to kill him if he did not comply. The suspects took the victim’s backpack and bicycle and placed them in the bed of a black pick-up truck they had nearby.
The suspects then searched the victim for money and any other items not turned over. Suddenly, the suspects threw the stolen items out of the truck and quickly fled the scene.
A brief description of the suspects and their vehicle was broadcast to other deputies in the area. At about 11:11 p.m., Deputy Fabinski observed the suspect vehicle at the intersection of Camino Del Mar and 28th Street in Del Mar. Deputy Fabinski attempted to stop the vehicle by activating his overhead lights and siren, but the vehicle failed to yield and drove at a high rate of speed down Coast Boulevard.
The vehicle continued down Coast Boulevard without stopping at the stop signs at each intersection and eventually turned westbound on 13th Street.
With Deputy Fabinski still following, the driver of the vehicle lost control and struck a parked vehicle on 13th Street. At that point, both suspects exited the vehicle and fled on foot toward the dead end of 13th Street where there is a steep bluff leading down to the railroad tracks and the beach.
Both suspects tumbled down the bluff and continued to flee along the railroad tracks. A perimeter was established with other deputies who had responded to the area.
At about 11:18 p.m., Deputy Block located and detained one of the suspects, who was identified as a juvenile, as he came off the railroad tracks in the area of Coast Boulevard at 15th Street. The other suspect was not located and is still outstanding at this time. That outstanding suspect was described as a heavyset Hispanic male, with a shaved head, goatee, 18-19 years old, about 5’4″ in height, wearing a dark colored, checkered, button-down short-sleeve shirt.
Both victims were transported to the juvenile suspect’s location and positively identified him in a curbside line-up. The suspect was later booked into Juvenile Hall on charges of Armed Robbery and Criminal Threats.
The investigation is ongoing in an attempt to identify and apprehend the second suspect. The follow-up investigation will be handled by the North Coastal Sheriff’s Station Detectives and Gang Investigators.
