Carlsbad CA— Enjoy a fun evening of good food, live entertainment and a silent auction at a special outdoor screening of If You Could Only Cook starring Leo Carrillo, at the city’s annual ‘Dinner and a Movie’ fundraiser to support Leo Carrillo Ranch Historic Park educational programming.
The event takes place Friday, Aug. 14, with dinner served at 6:30 p.m. The movie starts promptly at sunset following an episode of The Cisco Kid. Be sure to bring your low back chair, warm clothes, a flashlight and a blanket. Dining tickets, which must be purchased by Aug. 8, start at $40 with additional exclusive dining options available. Only 150 tickets are available for this popular annual event, and there will be no ticket sales at the door.
Proceeds from the event support the Carrillo Ranch Trust Fund, which was established by the City of Carlsbad to enable the public to contribute to the continued restoration and enhancement of this historic site. Donations to the trust fund are only used for the development, operation and maintenance of Leo Carrillo Ranch.
The featured movie this year, If You Could Only Cook, is classic story of finding love when you least expect it. Frustrated by his board of directors’ refusal to approve his new car design, wealthy car company executive Jim (Herbert Marshall) strikes up a conversation with a homeless woman (Jean Arthur) in the park. Both fed up with their places in society, Jim agrees to help Joan by posing as a butler and as her husband. After being hired by gangster Mike (Leo Carrillo), Jim and Joan begin to fall for each other, causing Jim to question his upcoming marriage. “If You Could Only Cook is a fast-paced romantic comedy set amidst the hustle and bustle of post prohibition era New York, but this comedic story is timeless,” says Recreation Supervisor Charles Balteria.
Once owned by actor and conservationist Leo Carrillo, the historic park features hand-crafted adobe buildings, antique windmills, a reflecting pool and many other beautiful historic structures where visitors can explore and experience California history. Nature-lovers delight in gorgeous agave, bougainvillea, birds of paradise, plentiful trees and the company of dozens of brilliant peacocks who call the ranch home. Leo Carrillo Ranch is a designated National Historic Landmark that was opened to the public by the City of Carlsbad in 2003.
