Oceanside CA— Please join us at Oceanside Public Library for two special Okinawan cultural activities the last week of July. On Tuesday, July 28, at 2:00 p.m., the Library will present a dance performance in the Civic Center Library community rooms, located 330 N. Coast Highway in Oceanside. Led by instructor Ms. Keiko Yonamine, the dancers will delight us with a demonstration of Okinawan dance styles. Ms. Yonamine and her students perform throughout Southern California, and recently entertained audiences at the Okinawa Association of America’s Utayabira Uduyabira (“Let’s Sing,” “Let’s Dance”) biannual cultural festival.
On Wednesday, July 29, at 2:30 p.m. the Library will present an Okinawan eisaa drumming workshop at the Mission Branch Library, 3861-B Mission Avenue in Oceanside. After a demonstration of eisaa drumming by a local Okinawan-American family, attendees will make their own drumming baton and have a chance to try the drums.
Both programs are free and for adults and children of all ages. The programs are funded by a Talk Story grant through the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association and supported by a partnership with the Okinawa Association of America.
