With a platform championing family values and business, the ownership of U-T San Diego officially announced its purchase of the North County Times, the only daily competitor to the U-T in the county.
The announcement, by way of a promotional video posted Oct. 1 on YouTube, was made as about 80 layoff notices were sent to staff members in areas where there was duplication in departments, according to reports.
“Pro family. Pro military. And pro business,” U-T CEO John Lynch said in the video. “And I believe that these people are all out there in a very beautiful area of our community, but caring about their families and struggling in a very tough time.”
In the video, Lynch said the U-T would build on the legacy of the North County Times to focus on the strengths of its communities.
U-T North County columnist Logan Jenkins also noted the Times’ legacy in the region.
“I think that there’s a lot of loyalty to the North County Times,” Jenkins said in the video, noting the legacy of its predecessors, The North County Blade-Citizen of Oceanside and the Times Advocate of Escondido. “I hope that we keep the best parts of it, which is that sort of granular, local reporting, and we become a stronger paper as a result.”
The video also revealed a new combined “U-T NCT” logo.
Property developer Douglas Manchester and media executive Lynch created Manchester Lynch Integrated Media Holdings and bought The San Diego Union-Tribune last December from Platinum Equity, which purchased the newspaper from longtime owners Copley Press.
