Encinitas, neighboring cities see increase in COVID-19 cases
July 24, 2021
Encinitas and other north coastal communities are not alone in seeing an uptick in COVID-19 infections as the Delta variant rapidly spreads across San Diego County and the United States in general, county numbers showed this past week.
Encinitas saw a seven-day average case rate of 6.31 per 100,000 people with 28 new cases as of the county’s July 21 update, a significant jump from the city’s previous week case rate of 1.35.
For Carlsbad, there was a seven-day average case rate of 7.31 per 100,000 people with 59 new cases as of July 21, up from the city’s previous week case rate of 3.35.
These numbers put the cities and other communities with similar results in an orange tier — moderate transmission — according to the county’s COVID-19 tracking website.
“If more than an average of 7 out of 100,000 people test positive each day of a seven-day period, the state (of California) would consider this ‘widespread,’” according to Sharp healthcare system’s explanation of this metric.
Solana Beach saw a similar uptick to Encinitas: 6.15 cases per 100,000 people.
Other North County communities with increases in case rates as of July 21:
Escondido: 6.92, up from 3.74
Fallbrook: 7.21, no report from the previous week
Oceanside: 6.58, up from 3.29
San Marcos: 6.39, up from 2.76
Vista: 7.28, up from 3.36
Del Mar and areas around Escondido and San Marcos did not have numbers available as of the July 21 report.
